How to Ask Natural Follow-Up Questions in Mandarin

6 min read · 8 expressions with examples

When to use these

A conversation dies when every exchange is question → answer → silence. Follow-up questions are what turn two monologues into a real discussion. The good news: in Mandarin, a small set of short, flexible phrases covers most situations—and they are much easier than forming a long original sentence.

8 natural follow-up expressions

后来呢?hòulái ne?
"What happened next?" — perfect when someone is telling a story.
A: 我上次去旅行的时候迷了路。 B: 后来呢?
为什么这么说?wèishénme zhème shuō?
"Why do you say that?" — asks for a reason without sounding confrontational.
A: 我觉得住在大城市压力太大了。 B: 为什么这么说?
比如说?bǐrú shuō?
"For example?" — short and very natural when a point is too abstract.
A: 现在的科技让人更孤独。 B: 比如说?
你是指……吗?nǐ shì zhǐ ... ma?
"Do you mean ...?" — checks your understanding and keeps the conversation going.
你是指面对面聊天那种陪伴吗?
那你觉得呢?nà nǐ juéde ne?
"So what do you think?" — returns the question after your own answer.
我一般会提前计划。那你觉得呢?
真的吗?zhēn de ma?
"Really?" — shows surprise and invites the person to say more.
A: 我从来没坐过飞机。 B: 真的吗?
这我倒没想过。zhè wǒ dào méi xiǎngguò.
"I hadn't actually thought of that." — an honest, natural reaction that buys you time.
这我倒没想过,让我想想……
你能举个例子吗?nǐ néng jǔ ge lìzi ma?
"Can you give an example?" — slightly more careful than 比如说, good for groups.
这个观点很有意思,你能举个例子吗?

Tone differences

比如说? and 真的吗? are casual and quick—great with peers. 你能举个例子吗? and 你是指……吗? are a little more deliberate and work well when you want to be polite or precise. None of these are formal; all of them are normal in friendly adult conversation.

Common mistakes

A two-minute practice

Take any opinion—"外卖让人变懒了"—and respond to it out loud three times, each time with a different follow-up from this list. Then try the reverse: state your own opinion and answer the follow-up you just asked. This trains both sides of the exchange.

You do not need dozens of question patterns. Six to eight follow-ups you can say automatically will change how your conversations feel.
